At Redhill Primary School we believe that the science curriculum provides children with a developing understanding of the world around them as well as equipping them with key skills that will enable them to continue learning within the classroom and beyond, fostering a respect for the environment both locally and globally. Through science, children are encouraged to use their natural curiosity to extend their learning by exploring their environment and making sense of their experiences using scientific skills. In doing so, children have opportunities. Science is to be taught weekly, using the time allocation shown below. However, a greater amount of time may need to be reallocated to the weeks where investigative is being carried out. This will allow for the whole process to be followed through by the children and also allow the teacher to assess a focus area of the investigation

 

Our aims are that all children should

 

  • develop children’s scientific knowledge and understanding of concepts;
  • develop their explanatory power and communicate it through talk, writing and other forms of recording;
  • develop and use scientific methods of investigation, including an awerness of the enquiry cycle;
  • develop and extend scientific skills
  • develop and nurture positive attitudes towards their environment and to each other

Progression and continuity

Our science currclum offers opportunities for children to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding by building upon what they can already do and introducing new skills in each year group. This is achieved through using the skills progression document written by the coordinator. It outlines each key element and states what should have been achieved at the end of each year group from nursery – Y6.​
